Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden |
OK, I admit it. I thought this was a chick book when I heard about it. But I finally broke down and read it, and I am glad I did. The book follows the life of Sayuri, a young girl sold into to the services of a geisha house. This makes fascinating reading, discovering how geishas are trained and treated, from Sayuri's earliest lessons to the auction of her mizuage (her virginity) to her rise in prestige to one of the best geishas in the country. To many of us in the west who assume that a geisha is nothing more than a prostitute, this is an eye-opening book, fascinating and enthralling.

Nightwork : Sexuality, Pleasure, and Corporate
Masculinity in a Tokyo Hostess Club by Anne Allison |
Anne Allison is an AMerican who worked in a hostess bar in Tokyo. Her insights and observations are both interesting and compelling. For those of us outside this fantasyland of make-believe, we can finally get a glimpse of the modern versions of the geisha house. A little academic, the book is till worthwhile.
